Church leadership - developing your people

    Develop Leaders Who Develop Others

The 30-minute course that helps you pick one leader worth a quarter of your time, hand them real work without hovering, and stop being the lid on your church's growth.

    • 30 minutes
    • 5 short lessons
    • Advanced level
    • Self-paced
    • Free course

Built for team leaders, ministry directors and pastors with direct reports. Grounded in Scripture and in how leaders actually grow the people around them.

This course is free. It's part of ChurchAcademy.

From the team behind Fluro, used by hundreds of churches, now part of Subsplash.

    The problem

It is Monday and you are looking at your week. It is full of things only you can do. Two of them your best volunteer could be doing already, if anyone had ever taught them.

That is the quiet trap of ministry: it is always faster to do it yourself than to teach someone, so you do, and the church grows right up to the size of one person's capacity. Yours.

Nobody handed you a way to tell visible energy from developable potential, or a plan to hand off real work without hovering or dumping it. That is the whole problem, and it is fixable in a quarter.

This course is for you if

    • Your calendar is full of work only you can do, and some of it your best person could do by now.
    • You keep meaning to develop people, but it is always faster to just do it yourself.
    • You have picked the loudest volunteer before and watched it not work out.
    • Growth has stalled and you are starting to wonder if you are the bottleneck.

What you'll walk away able to do

    Read the four signals

Read a candidate on Initiative, Coachability, Capacity and Character, with Character as a gate that can rule someone out on its own.

    Pick and plan

Pick one leader per quarter on the evidence and write a 90-day plan with three dated stretch assignments.

    Hand off real work

Use the Three Handoff Levels to delegate real work, and step back a level instead of taking it back when it stalls.

    Coach the rhythm

Run the 15-minute Friday Debrief and name one thing you will stop doing, on the record.

    What you'll learn

The 4-Signal Read. Why Character is a gate and not a score, why Coachability breaks the tie, and why Capacity means room to grow, not free hours.

    Two things you keep

    The 90-Day Development Plan

A one-page template naming one leader, three stretch assignments with handoff dates, and the required what I will stop doing line.

    The Pipeline View

A one-page slot view of every direct report as Ready, Developing or Mismatched, each with the next move written down.

    How it works

    1. 1

      Start the course.

    2. 2

Take the 30 minutes: five short lessons, one at a time, on your phone.

    3. 3

Keep the two pages, name your one leader, and book your first Friday Debrief before you close the tab.

What changes in the first 30 days

    • You have named one leader to develop this quarter, on the evidence, not on who is loudest.
    • There is a written 90-day plan for that leader, with dates, not just an intention in your head.
    • Each direct report has one named next move, and at least one stretch assignment is in motion.
    • You are doing observably less of the work your best person could be doing.

These are the course's design goals, not a performance guarantee.
